Doe Run Offers Underground Mine Tours during Old Miners’ Days
VIBURNUM, Mo. (Sept. 17, 2013) — In Viburnum, Mo., one of the world’s most active mining regions, the public will have a unique opportunity to observe The Doe Run Company’s underground lead mining operations during the upcoming Old Miners’ Days celebration. The three-day celebration honors generations of miners who have paved the way for Missouri’s mining history and will take place Oct. 4 – 6.
Guests may tour Buick Mine and Mill for free on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Those who would like to take the tour must be 12 or older and register at Doe Run’s Old Miners’ Days booth. Buses will transport guests to and from the tour site.
Doe Run’s lead mines stretch for miles underground and some are as deep as 1,250 feet underground. Four of the company’s six mines – Buick, Brushy Creek, Casteel and Fletcher – are interconnected by more than 20 miles of roadway and hundreds of side roads. Typically a pleasant 65 degrees, the mines are rocky and damp, and feature glittering rock faces and dramatic rock pillars.
“Lead mining has supported our local economy and helped to develop Crawford, Dent, Iron, Reynolds, St. Francois and Washington counties,” said Steve Batts, general manager of Doe Run’s Southeast Missouri Mining and Milling Division (SEMO). “We live in one of the world’s most active lead mining districts, and we are thrilled to offer residents a glimpse into our successful underground mining operations.”
Employees and retirees from Doe Run’s SEMO operations will join the local community to celebrate the region’s rich mining history. Batts will speak during the 27th annual Old Miners’ Days opening ceremony at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5. Doe Run is also sponsoring a mining equipment display above ground.
Julie Pratt, Dillard resident and one of Doe Run’s purchasing clerks, is chairing this year’s Old Miners’ Days festivities. Many other Doe Run employees will volunteer their time throughout the weekend by conducting mine tours and staffing the company’s Old Miners’ Days booth.
